Opening images and exporting: formats, quality and file size
Three ways to open an image
- Click "File → Open" and choose an image on your computer or phone;
- Drag an image file into the browser window;
- Copy an image somewhere else, come back and press
Ctrl + Vto paste it.
The image comes in as a new layer and the canvas adapts to its size.
Images are processed only in your browser and never uploaded.
Exporting
When you are done, click "File → Export" (shortcut S). The export window has:
- File name: the name to save under;
- Save as type: PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF, BMP and more;
- Quality: JPG and WEBP only, 1–100; higher is sharper and bigger;
- Show file size: works out the exported size live, so you can adjust quality while watching it;
- Save layers: all layers combined, or only the selected layer.
Click OK and the browser downloads the image.
Which format?
- PNG: lossless and supports transparency. Use it for cut-outs, icons and screenshots;
- JPG: for photos; small files, but no transparency (transparent areas turn white);
- WEBP: smaller than JPG and supports transparency; good for web pages;
- GIF: for simple animations.
To shrink a photo, choose JPG with quality 75–85. You usually can't see the difference and the file is often less than half the size.
Printing
"File → Print" (Ctrl + P) prints the canvas directly.
